High Court Rules Against Rosmah
The Kuala Lumpur High Court has ruled in favour of Lebanese jewellery firm Global Royalty Trading SAL, ordering former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor to pay RM67.5 million in damages. Senior lawyer Datuk David Gurupatham, representing the jewellery firm, announced after the ruling that his client had instructed full enforcement of the judgment, and that every legal avenue would be pursued to recover the sum.
Bankruptcy on the Table
Gurupatham stated plainly that if Rosmah fails to pay, the firm would not rule out filing for her bankruptcy. "Our instructions are clear — we will enforce the judgment until every sen is recovered, or she is declared bankrupt," he said. However, he clarified that the firm would not immediately apply for bankruptcy upon expiry of the court's one-month payment deadline, but would first exhaust other enforcement mechanisms.
44 Pieces, 43 Still Missing
The case centres on 44 pieces of jewellery worth USD14.57 million (approximately RM68.3 million), which Global Royalty Trading claims were handed to Rosmah in 2018 on consignment — for viewing and selection — but were never paid for or returned. Of the 44 pieces, only one diamond-encrusted emerald bracelet was recovered through police seizure proceedings and returned to the firm. The remaining 43 pieces remain unaccounted for.
Rosmah to Appeal
The court also dismissed Rosmah's third-party claim against the Inspector-General of Police and the government. She had earlier claimed the jewellery was seized during a 2018 police raid linked to the 1MDB investigation. Rosmah's lawyer, Rajivindran Pillai, confirmed that the defence would apply to stay the judgment pending an appeal to the Court of Appeal.
