(Johor Bahru, July 11) The Johor state election result 2026 has delivered a resounding and historic victory for Barisan Nasional, which swept 48 of the 56 state seats to secure a commanding two-thirds majority and retain sole control of the Johor state government. The result exceeded the expectations of many observers and marked the strongest electoral performance by BN in Johor in recent memory.

UMNO emerged as the single largest party within the coalition, claiming 36 seats, while MCA doubled its tally from four to eight seats and the MIC won all four seats it contested. The opposition Pakatan Harapan coalition was reduced to just eight seats — down from 13 in the previous election — while Perikatan Nasional failed to win a single seat, surrendering the three seats it had held going into the contest. New entrant Parti Maju, contesting 15 seats, also failed to make any impact, finishing without a single win.

The election saw voter turnout rise significantly to 67.44 percent, up from 54.92 percent in the previous Johor state election, signalling strong public engagement with the democratic process and reflecting the intensive ground campaigns mounted by all sides in the weeks leading up to polling day.
BN chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the coalition’s victory at a press conference held at UMNO Johor headquarters at around 8.30pm on polling night, and later confirmed the final tally of 48 seats just before midnight. He described the result as the best performance by BN in Johor under the leadership of caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz, crediting the win to the collective efforts of all party members and grassroots supporters.
The Johor state election result 2026 firmly consolidates BN’s grip on what is one of Malaysia’s most strategically important and economically significant states, and is expected to have significant implications for the national political landscape ahead of the next general election.
